More than Music - An Ideology of BTS

BTS - Who are they?

From sheltered adolescence to navigating the harsh realities of the entertainment industry – the seven members of BTS faced a daunting challenge most teenagers would not even dream of. While their peers enjoyed the relative safety of home, these young men embarked on a daring journey, leaving their families behind to chase their dreams in a small, unknown company called Big Hit Entertainment.

This extraordinary yet ordinary boy band, with members hailing from all walks of life, defied the odds and became a global phenomenon. Taking a closer look at their individual paths that led to the formation of BTS:

• Kim Namjoon (RM): Kim Namjoon, also known as RM, is the cool dude who became the leader of BTS. He was the first member to join Big Hit because he's an awesome rapper and loves music so much. His talent and passion convinced the company to create a hip-hop group like BTS.

• Min Yoongi (Suga): Min Yoongi, also known as Suga, was initially attracted to Big Hit because of his skills as a producer. However, his incredible musical abilities and captivating stage presence soon made him one of the powerful rappers in BTS.

• Jung Hoseok (J-Hope): Another skilled rapper, J-Hope, joined Big Hit with dreams of idol life. His infectious energy and sunshine-like personality became integral to BTS's dynamic.

• Kim Seok Jin (Jin): Initially scouted for his captivating visuals, Jin surprised everyone with his hidden vocal talent. Though he had acting aspirations, he embraced his role in BTS and became the group's charming eldest member.

• Park Jimin: Jimin became really good at dancing thanks to his awesome dance teacher. Big Hit noticed how amazing he was and saw how he had killer moves and could sing like a boss, which made him stand out from the rest of BTS.

• Kim Taehyung (V): Originally accompanying a friend to an audition, V’s unique charm and hidden musical abilities impressed the company staff, leading him to become a key vocalist and visual powerhouse in BTS.

• Jeon Jungkook: Jungkook had a lot of agencies wanting him, but he ended up choosing Big Hit because RM's vision and leadership really grabbed his attention. He's super talented in rapping, singing, and dancing, which is why he's the youngest and most versatile member of BTS.

These individual stories, woven together, paint a picture of remarkable resilience, unwavering dedication, and a serendipitous twist of fate. What began as a seven-boy gamble in a small company blossomed into a global phenomenon, proving that talent, hard work, and a unique bond can conquer even any uncertain start.

The BTS journey

Debuting in 2013 as newcomers from a lesser-known agency, BTS faced an uphill battle. The industry barely glanced their way, leaving them questioning their path after a year of obscurity. Then, in 2014, their album “Dark & Wild” in 2014 failed to make an impact, almost crushing their aspirations and sparking talks of breaking up. However, it was their CEO at the time, Bang Si-hyuk, who stood up for them and persuaded them to give it one final try.

In 2015, BTS experienced a breakthrough with their album “The Most Beautiful Moment of Life Part 1” and the emotional track “I Need You.” This track resonated with netizens, finally offering them a taste of public recognition. They continued to build on this success by releasing “Run” in the second part of the album, further solidifying their rising global presence.

2016 saw the release of “Wings,” an album that surpassed borders. Its lead single, “Blood Sweat and Tears,” mesmerised American audiences and earned them their first major Korean music award. While some dismissed their success as a stroke of luck, BTS had proven their resilience and talent. This marked only the start.

In 2017, BTS started their “Love Yourself” era which was a huge success. They released a series of albums (Map of the Soul) that were loved by fans in Korea and America. These albums broke records and won over the hearts of many. But BTS did not stop there. In 2020, they ended the year with “BE,” an album that talked about the pandemic and how they personally grew through it.

History was made when BTS became the first Korean artists to be nominated for a Grammy. This incredible achievement solidified their position as leaders in global music. Their journey is a true testament to their unyielding determination, growth as artists, and commitment to connecting with fans through their music. BTS shows us that dreams can come true if you work hard and follow your passion, even when others doubt you. They've proven that they can exceed expectations and break barriers in the music industry.

The persona of each BTS member

Kim Namjoon is the only member who is fluent in English. His character reflects how one should listen to others carefully to become a good speaker.

Jin is the one who makes the group united. He is like a pillar. More likely, he is the backbone of BTS. He is a person who does not get too affected by other people’s opinions and wants to live his life in his way.

Yoongi is the most genuine and mature person in the group. His life story tells us that if one works hard to pursue his dream, he will conquer it one day.

Hoseok is a fun-loving person. One cannot stay unhappy around him as he always makes them laugh.

Jimin is the most caring person in this group. He looks after everyone. He is a friend whom everyone needs in their life.

Taehyung, aka V, has the weirdest personality in this group. His band-mates call him an alien. He is the secret weapon of the band. He is a social butterfly and a man-child. He is an example of how one can have fun in every small moment of their life.

Last, Jungkook is the golden maknae. He can do almost all sorts of things. He has the quality of never giving up, which gave him this massive success at such a young age.  

BTS: More than music

Music can mend broken hearts, ignite souls, and whisper hope even in our most difficult times. The music created by BTS is a perfect example of this power. Their “Love Yourself” series wasn't just a catchy slogan. Instead, it was an anthem for self-acceptance, reminding us that only by loving ourselves can we truly find peace and share it with the world.

In “Zero O’Clock,” they do not just sing about the struggles we face, they sit beside us in the quiet hours, offering a gentle hand and reminding us that we are not alone. “Magic Shop” is not just a motivational speech. Rather, it is like going on a trip together, a reminder to not give up on our dreams and pursue them with unwavering determination.

The ideology of BTS

BTS is more than just a band with catchy music. Their music is like a secret rebellion, spreading a message of self-love, acceptance, and togetherness. It is not just about entertaining us - it is about breaking down barriers and connecting people from all over the world.
