Too Much or Too Less: Redefining Productivity in a Gen Z World

Gen Z is disrupting the productivity-obsessed world. They are ditching the rigid, checklist-driven approach of the past. The traditional question “Is it too much or too less?” feels outdated as Gen Z redefines the concept of success. This generation craves a different metric, one that values well-being, purpose, and a healthy work-life balance.

Rethinking the Image of Productivity

The traditional image of productivity, which involves a long list of tasks and deadlines, is being questioned by Gen Z. They understand that taking care of oneself, connecting with others, and engaging with the environment are all important aspects of a productive day. Engaging in exercise, having meaningful conversations with friends, or simply taking a mindful walk in nature can all contribute to a fulfilling day, rather than just completing tasks on a checklist.

A Gen Z Maslow

Maslow’s hierarchy of needs is getting a Gen Z update. While previous generations climbed the ladder towards self-actualisation, Gen Z is placing social needs at the top. Strong communities, supportive networks, and the chance to make a difference are essential for their sense of fulfilment. Now, companies are recognising this shift and providing employee retreats and social programs that address these changing needs of Gen Z.

Remote Work: A Catalyst for Change

The pandemic-fuelled rise of remote work has been a game-changer for Gen Z. Gen Z, while working remotely, found a level of flexibility that traditional office setups did not provide. This newfound independence, along with the ability to control their own schedule and environment, surprisingly led to increased productivity. It showed that trust and empowerment are vital for unleashing potential, as opposed to constant supervision.

The Great Resignation: Beyond the Paycheck

The “Great Resignation” serves as a stark reminder that Gen Z values more than just a paycheck. They want a job that gives them purpose, meaning, and a good balance between work and life. The appeal of a high salary is no longer as important as having the freedom to be flexible, working in a supportive atmosphere, and having opportunities to grow.

Breaking the Mold: Innovation through Disruption

Gen Z is not afraid to question the status quo. They are the generation that witnessed the rise of big tech giants like Amazon come out of nowhere and change everything. They understand the power of innovation and are unafraid to disrupt established norms in pursuit of a better tomorrow.

The Bottom Line: A Call for Balance

Gen Z wants balance, they want a world where success is not judged by numbers on a spreadsheet, but by how happy we are, the relationships we have, and what we do to make the future better. It is high time that we pay heed to what they are saying and acknowledge the importance of finding balance in all aspects of life.
